Lennox

Having Sandor all to myself the next two days was glorious. No one bothered us, text alerts stopped going off, and it was a sweet, quiet time for us to get to know our twin boys. We were closer to choosing a nanny but couldn’t make a decision until Joe finished doing background checks.

I was leaning toward a young woman named Sabrina. She was barely nineteen, but Solange knew her from her hometown in the northern part of the country and we knew she didn’t really have any job prospects. Her mother had recently passed away and she no longer had a place to live, so she’d been counting on the generosity of neighbors, but we still had to make sure she didn’t have ties to terrorist groups, the rebellion, or the Brat. Hopefully, it wouldn’t take too long to find out.

Sandor had gone to work out today and I had to admit I was a little jealous. As much as I loved these babies, I wasn’t used to being tethered to the apartment, to not being able to come and go as I pleased. Even after just three days, I was antsy. I felt great, so it wasn’t like I needed to rest, but I was a long way from my normal self.

Since Sandor was gone anyway, it was the perfect time to talk to Courtney and I invited her up to our suite.

“Hi,” she said when she arrived, immediately reaching for Hayden and sinking into the rocking chair with him.

“I guess you didn’t come to see me,” I said wryly, though I chuckled.

“I totally did.” She grinned up at me. “But I can’t remember the last time I got to cuddle a newborn. What did you want to talk about?”

“I was wondering what your plans are. You mentioned leaving the military and I was a little confused.”

She looked away, the playful laughter on her face disappearing. “I, um, well, a medical issue came up.”

“Are you okay?” I asked quickly. “What’s going on? Do you need anything?”

“No. I’m okay. I’ll be fine, but I couldn’t continue to fly helicopters and if I can’t do that, I can’t be in the military.”

“Were you given a medical discharge?”

She swallowed. “Lennox, it’s still kind of raw—could we not talk about it? I’m sorry, I’m just not ready yet.”

“Of course.” I paused. “So, do you have plans? Career-wise, I mean.”

“Not yet. I have a nice savings account, and I’ve been teaching some martial arts classes which brings in a little money and keeps me busy. Why?”

“Sandor and I were talking, and it occurred to me you might want a job here. As a Royal Protector. None of us can fly and as short-staffed as we are, I thought it might be perfect for you. And us.”

“I…” Her voice trailed off and she looked distinctly uncomfortable. “I’m honored and flattered, Len, but I can’t. My medical condition isn’t conducive to that kind of work. Not short-term anyway. Maybe it’ll change in the future, but for now, I have to decline.
